National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute

Definition NHLBI. An organization in the federal government that plans, conducts and supports research related to the prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and rehabilitation of patients suffering from diseases of the heart, blood vessels, and lungs; blood diseases; and sleep disorders. It also supports research on the clinical use of blood and management of blood resources. NHLBI is one of 27 Institutes and Centers that make up the National Institutes of Health.
