Korean: Search and Display Hints

Korean language records in the Library of Congress Online Catalog are cataloged using a romanized script (see ALA-LC Romanization Tables). However, some information is also provided in Korean characters (e.g., author, title, publisher fields, etc.).

Screen: Record with Korean

In order to display records and view the non-Roman characters (like Korean), please see help on Displaying Non-Roman Characters in the Online Catalog.

CJK Compatibility Database

Use the CJK Compatibility Database to quickly and conveniently replace non-MARC21 characters with MARC21 equivalents, or a missing character symbol.

Searching in Korean

There are two ways to search the records in Korean:

  • enter search words using romanized script
  • enter search words Korean characters

In order to enter Korean characters, you will need to use the appropriate Input Method Editors (IME). (view more help on installing and using IMEs) *

No matter which method of searching you use, the resulting records will display the romanized information along with the Korean script portions of the record (as long as both are present in the record).

Tip for searching Korean using romanized script:

  1. The Library of Congress uses the McCune-Reischauer system to romanize Korean. For more details about the Korean Romanization system employed by the Library of Congress, see ALA-LC Romanization Tables at http://www.loc.gov/catdir/cpso/romanization/korean.pdf

Tip for searching Korean using non-Roman characters:

  1. Since the early 1980s, the Library of Congress has cataloged Korean monographs and serials using different systems. Therefore, spacing affects search results. Please see below for examples.

    Title, Author/Creator, Keyword Search

    A) A title, author/creator, or keyword search that includes more than one word, with spaces between the words, will not retrieve any serials.

    B) A similar search that includes more than one word, without spaces between the words, will not retrieve any monographs.

    Example:
    한국기업

With space 한국 기업 -- No serials retrieved
    Screen: no serials retrieved

Without space 한국기업 -- Only serials retrieved
    Screen: Search without space

Therefore, to perform accurate and reliable searches, please try both, with and without spacing.

Notes:

* When using the IME for Korean, set the Input Mode to "Korean (Hangul)".

1) Subjects will not be searchable in Korean.

2) Printing and saving work in exactly the same way. The records will display the Romanized information along with the Korean script portions of the record (in case both are present in the record).

3) Emailing the record: if your search results contained diacritic marks or Korean characters, your email will not contain complete information. Please choose to "save" or "print" your search results instead.

4) Sorting: Korean is sorted in South Korean dictionary order.

Use the browser's [Back] button to resume searching.
