Constructing a Modular Unit Kaw Nation of Oklahoma |
Demographic
Information:
Known as "the wind people," the Kaw originally lived along the
lower Kansas River in villages consisting of conical-shaped lodges. The Kaw
Nation is located in northern Oklahoma. There are 2,439 enrolled members of
the Tribe.
Type of Program:
The Child Care program serves 35 children, including six infants.
Effective Program Strategy:
The Kaw Nation had trust land available on which to construct
a modular unit for the Child Care Center. Water and electricity were also
available. The Tribe hired an engineering company to build a foundation system
for solid footing before the unit was delivered. In order to get the modular
unit to the site, the building was delivered from the factory in four units
and put together onsite. The inside was then finished with sheet rock, flooring,
etc. After that, the modular unit was furnished. It is approximately 3,500
square feet, and houses offices, as well as, the Child Care Center.
Resources:
Tribal CCDF Construction/Renovation funds were the main resource used.
Results:
Parents now have more choice in child care options in the Kaw Nation service
area due to the construction of this licensed child care center.
Lessons Learned:
Have as much work as possible done on the modular unit at the factory
before it is delivered. The Kaw Nation installed additional windows, added
a Dutch door, changed the layout of cabinets and adapted appliances to fit
in the designated spaces. All these changes would have been less expensive,
if done at the factory.
