Conclusion of the Fifth U.S.-PRC Senior DialogueThe following text was released today by the U.S. Embassy in Beijing following the conclusion of the fifth U.S.-PRC Senior Dialogue:
The fifth round of the U.S.-China Senior Dialogue concluded today. Deputy Secretary of State John Negroponte and Executive Vice Foreign Minister Dai Bingguo co-chaired the extensive discussions on January 17-18 in Guizhou Province, China.
Building on previous rounds, Executive Vice Foreign Minister Dai and Deputy Secretary Negroponte discussed global trends, the evolution of the U.S.-China relationship and important bilateral issues. Specific discussion topics included the importance of peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait, the protection of human rights, Iran, North Korea, and Burma. The two also exchanged views on military transparency, and both delegations included defense officials. Discussions were frank and open.
The United States and China also conduct on-going Sub-Dialogue discussions at the Assistant Secretary level. In recent months, we have had Sub-Dialogue meetings to discuss Latin America, Africa, the Middle East, Central and South Asia, and East Asia.
Previous rounds of the Senior Dialogue were held in Beijing in August 2005, Washington in December 2005, Beijing in October 2006, and Washington in June 2007. The two sides agreed in principle to hold the sixth round of the Senior Dialogue in Washington, D.C. by the end of the year.
