2004-2005 Assistant Principals' Conference |
From November 15-19, 2004, fifty one DoDDS-Pacific/DDESS Guam assistant principals and assistant superintendents gather at the New Sanno Hotel in downtown Tokyo for our annual assistant principals' conference. The conference theme Instructional Leadership for Mathematical and Scientific Inquiry , provided participants with an in-depth look at instructional best practices in mathematics and science instruction, content standards in both subjects, and several interactive sessions designed to increase their knowledge of inquiry instruction.
This year's conference included a welcome address by Captain King H. Dietrich, Commander Fleet Activities Yokosuka, who relived some of his own experiences as a former DoDDS student at Nile C. Kinnick High School, and stressed the importance of DoDDS schools in the overseas military community.
Addresses by Dr. Joseph Tafoya, Director DoDEA, and Dr. Beth Middlemiss, Principal Deputy Director, DoDEA discussed the current state of affairs in DoDEA and their vision for the future of DoDDS-Pacific/DDESS-Guam schools. Dr. Middlemiss further discussed continuing priorities in the high school and special education initiatives, DoDEA online professional development, the professional/technical initiative, the transfer to SMS, and the mathematics and science standards implementation process.
Throughout the week, school leaders and guests were given an opportunity to deepen their understanding of the research that supports quality math and science instruction; acquire classroom observation skills that focus on best practices and program implementation in a standards-based school; and strengthen their knowledge of how classroom assessment impact decision making.
