Big Cypress National Preserve Fish Inventory & Monitoring Data
Data are available as Access® Database (.mdb) and as Excel® Spreadsheet (.xls)Big Cypress National Preserve Fish Inventory Database - This database contains records of the inventory of freshwater fishes of the Big Cypress National Preserve conducted by the National Audubon Society's Tavernier Science Center as part of the NPS Inventory and Monitoring Project, funded by the NPS and the USGS South Florida Place-based Program. The inventory and the sampling methods testing was a prelude to a fish-research study in the Preserve to gather quantitative baseline information on fish communities to be able to detect community changes that may result from new water-management practices. The database includes data from October 2002 through April 2004.
Big Cypress National Preserve Fish Monitoring and Assessment - The data collections for aquatic animals from Big Cypress National Preserve (BICY) were begun in July 2004 as part of an effort to establish a long-term monitoring program for fish abundance and community composition in forested wetlands in the Big Cypress National Preserve. The original funding was through the USGS Priority Ecosystems Studies Program for South Florida. In 2005, additional funding was derived from the Army Corps of Engineers Monitoring and Assessment Program (MAP). Because those funds were not received until June of 2005, there was a sampling hiatus of nearly one year. Now that funding has been secured, the program is proceeding and will continue for at least three years.
