Why was the data set created?

The Nation's coal resources are being assessed by the USGS. This assessment identifies and characterizes the coal beds and coal zones that will provide the bulk of the nation's coal-derived energy during the next century. This assessment is different from previous large-scale USGS assessments because files and databases are being stored in a digital format and are being analyzed using a Geographic Information System (GIS).


How was the data set created?

  2. How were the data generated, processed, and modified?

    Date: 1998 (process 1 of 1)
    Data on the elevation of the top of the Rollins Sandstone Mbr.came from several different sources. A file was generated from the Stratifact database that contained x, y data for location and the elevation of the top of the Rollins Sandstone Mbr. The file was introduced into EarthVision (EV) as a scattered data file.
    Structure contours on top of the Rollins Sandstone from the published map by Johnson (1983) were digitized in EV as a scattered data file. The two files were merged in EV.
    Locations with elevations for the top of the Rollins Sandstone were added to the merged data along the outcrop to add detail that we wouldn't achieve with just drill hole data and the digitized contours. The data were then gridded in EV. The map was plotted in EV with a contour interval of 500 ft. The contour lines were saved in a contour output file. The contour output file was converted to a file in 'arc generate' format using ISMARC and then converted to an ARC/INFO line coverage using an Arc Macro Language program from the Illinois State Geological Survey. The coverage was converted to a shapefile using ArcView.
