Army Corps Dredges Sediment Trap at Beardstown, Illinois
Public Affairs
ROCK ISLAND -- The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is hydraulically dredging approximately 24,000 cubic yards of sediment to create an experimental sediment trap at the mouth of the Sangamon River at Beardstown, Ill.

The experimental sediment trap will be approximately 5.1 acres in size with an average excavation of 3 feet. Final water depth will be approximately 3.5 feet from flat pool. When complete, the trap will capture sediment from the Sangamon and Illinois Rivers until filled.

The sediment trap is an effort to reduce future downstream dredging at chronic dredge sites on the Illinois River at Beardstown. The sediment trap will help determine the amount, rate and types of sediment accumulating in the area. This experimental trap will evaluate the effectiveness of a sediment trap to enable improved scheduling of dredging the Illinois River at Beardstown and potentially reduce the number of closures within the navigation channel. If the experimental sediment trap is successful, a permanent sediment trap in that location, or another location within the Sangamon River, will be considered.

The hydraulic dredging is being performed by LW Matteson, Inc., Burlington, Iowa.
