United States and Russia Pursue Strategic Security Dialogue

On September 15 the United States and Russia began a strategic security dialogue in Washington. Under Secretary of State for Arms Control and International Security Robert Joseph and Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Kislyak chaired today’s meeting and are leading this initiative.

The intent of this dialogue is to address a broad range of security challenges that both the United States and Russia face in the 21st century, and that are a source of mutual concern. This dialogue reflects the post-Cold War U.S.-Russian relationship and the ability of the two countries to work together in areas of common interest. In this spirit, we expect to consider such issues as further cooperation to combat the threat of terrorism involving weapons of mass destruction, measures to advance shared nonproliferation and counter-proliferation goals, and transparency and confidence-building measures in U.S. and Russian nuclear force postures and missile defense.

We plan to hold such discussions on a regular basis.
