WHAT

On October 22, the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine (NCCAM) will host the fourth of its Distinguished Lectures in the Science of Complementary and Alternative Medicine. "Herbal Medicine: Ancient Practice Meets Modern Science" will be presented by Norman R. Farnsworth, Ph.D., of the University of Illinois at Chicago.

WHEN

Wednesday, October 22, 2003, from 12 noon to 1:00 p.m. Masur Auditorium, NIH Clinical Center (Building 10) 9000 Rockville Pike, Bethesda, Maryland The event is free and open to the public and will be videocast live at http://videocast.nih.gov.

WHY

Norman R. Farnsworth, Ph.D., Director of the Program for Collaborative Research in the Pharmaceutical Sciences at the College of Pharmacy, University of Illinois at Chicago, will present the October 22 lecture. Dr. Farnsworth is a pioneer in the field of medicinal plants research and herbal medicines. He will discuss the challenges in this research, including plant collection and identification, isolation of active ingredients, understanding how botanicals work, and whether they are safe and effective.
