This is a Vector data set. It contains the following vector data types (SDTS terminology):
The map projection used is Lambert Conformal Conic.
Planar coordinates are encoded using Coordinate pair
Abscissae (x-coordinates) are specified to the nearest 250 meters
Ordinates (y-coordinates) are specified to the nearest 250 meters
Planar coordinates are specified in METERS
The horizontal datum used is North American Datum 1927.
The ellipsoid used is Clarke 1866.
The semi-major axis of the ellipsoid used is 6378206.4.
The flattening of the ellipsoid used is 1/294.98.

To delineate geologic province boundaries in Open File Report 97-470F Maps Showing Geology, Geologic Provinces, and Oil and Gas Fields of the The Far East, which is being compiled as a small scale geologic reference for the U.S. Geological Survey's World Energy Project assessment of undiscovered, technically recoverable oil and gas resources of the world. This coverage is used to produce a map and an Adobe Acrobat Portable Document of the map, to be published on CD-ROM. An Arcview shapefile derived from this coverage is used in an Arcview project.

This coverage is a portion of a composite coverage composed of geologic provinces defined by regional coordinators of the U.S. Geological Survey World Energy Project and others. There have been updates and corrections in spelling of the names of the provinces since they were first published in Open File Report 97-463 (Klett and others, 1997). The following provinces depicted in this coverage have been updated: 3108 Cuoqing Lupola Basin is now Cuoqing Lunpola Basin 3115 Jungger Basin is now Junggar Basin 3159 Yingehai Basin is now Yinggehai Basin 3403 Huskan Platform is now Huksan Platform 3404 Korba Bay Basin is now Korea Bay Basin Changes have been reviewed by regional coordinator.
Coverage has a fuzzy tolerance of 500 meters. Province boundaries are adjusted to more closely match surface geology, where applicable, since the provinces were first published in Open File Report 97-463 (Klett and others, 1997) Boundary changes have been reviewed by regional coordinator.
Not Applicable
Geologic provinces are delineated by U.S. Geological Survey World Energy Project regional coordinators and others with an emphasis on the determination of petroleum systems. Methods may vary from one region to another. The coverage has been updated. Spelling errors in province names are corrected. Province boundaries are adjusted to more closely match surface surface geology, where applicable.
Polygon topology is present, each polygon has one unique label point, there are no dangles, polygons are bounded at extent of coverage. The coverage has been topologically cleaned and built in Arc/Info.
