Combustion Sciences

Exterior view of the Combustion Research Facility

The Combustion Research Facility at Sandia/California

The Combustion Research Facility (CRF) is the Department of Energy’s premiere center for combustion science and technology. Photo of molecular beam mass spectrometry Founded by the Office of Science and funded principally by the Office of Science and the Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy, the CRF leads the nation and the world in revealing the complex scientific underpinnings of combustion and linking this scientific understanding to technology development. The chemical imaging, based primarily on laser diagnostics, and high-performance computer modeling and simulation provide the primary tools for revealing the intricate interplay of fluid dynamics and chemistry in combustion. For example, the fundamental science of flame chemistry is revealed by employing state-of-the-art experimental capabilities, including molecular-beam mass spectrometry, as seen in the photo at the right.

Further information is available at the CRF website.
