IBM's central commitment: education

Improving public schools around the world continues to be IBM's top social priority. Our efforts are focused on preparing the next generation of leaders and workers, as we also support community priorities and concerns. Through Reinventing Education and other strategic efforts, we're solving education's toughest problems with solutions that draw on advanced information technologies and the best minds IBM can apply. Our programs are paving the way for reforms in school systems around the world.

  IBM offers Workshop on Humanities Applications for World Community Grid
The workshop is aimed at digital humanities scholars, computer scientists working on humanities applications, library information professionals, and others who are involved in humanities and social science research using large digital datasets. The session will be hosted by IBM computer scientists who will conduct a hands-on session describing how high performance computing systems like IBM's World Community Grid can be used for humanities research. Brett Bobley and Peter Losin from the Office of Digital Humanities at the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) have been invited to discuss some of the NEH's grant opportunities for humanities projects involving high performance computing.

It will be held on October 6, 2008 at the IBM Institute for Electronic Government at 1301 K Street, NW, Washington DC, from 10:00am-3:00pm. To register, please contact Sherry Swick, sherry@us.ibm.com. Available spaces will be filled on a first-come, first served basis.

  EWeek 2008
Each year, volunteers for EWeek (or Engineers Week) promote an interest in mathematics, science, and technology among students, teachers and parents. The 2008 EWeek took place February 17-23, but volunteer activities related to EWeek actually occur throughout the year at many IBM sites. IBM Chairman Sam Palmisano is serving as the EWeek Honorary Chair.

  IBM is accepting applications from employees for its Corporate Service Corps
Over the next three years, IBM will choose 600 employees from different countries and business units with differing skills to participate in the Corporate Service Corps. This outside-the-office-program offers high potential IBMers a chance to develop their leadership skills while they perform top quality community service in developing countries in Africa, Asia, and Eastern Europe. Working through The Nature Conservancy's Great Rivers Partnership, IBM and The Nature Conservancy are collaborating to conserve some of the world's great rivers by meshing extraordinary computing power and science-driven conservation.

  IBM and Smithsonian open the National Museum of African American History and Culture — virtually
On September 26, 2007, IBM and the Smithsonian Institution announced the virtual opening of the National Museum of African American History and Culture, the Smithsonian's 19th and newest museum. This online presence marks the first time a major museum has opened its doors on the Web prior to the construction of its building.

  World Community Grid launches AfricanClimate@Home
IBM and the Climate Systems Analysis Group at the University of Cape Town are launching a global computing effort to improve regional climate models in order to make better projections about what effects a changing climate will have in Africa.

  World Community Grid launches "Discovering Dengue Drugs – Together"
In an effort to halt the spread of deadly infectious diseases now threatening to reach epidemic proportions around the world, an unprecedented research effort was launched by IBM, The University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB), and the University of Chicago to discover drugs to treat and cure dengue fever, West Nile encephalitis, hepatitis C, and a host of related diseases including yellow fever.

  IBM launches the Global Citizen's Portfolio
IBM has announced the Global Citizen's Portfolio, a new package of capabilities, integrated with existing IBM programs that will provide IBMers with valuable tools to enhance their expertise and careers within a globally integrating economy.

  Small businesses in developing countries to benefit from IFC and IBM Business Management Technology
IBM and the International Finance Corporation announced a major initiative to design and build a new business management platform for small businesses in the developing world, as well as for women- and minority-owned businesses in the United States.

  IBM announces "The Forbidden City"
IBM, in partnership with The Palace Museum, has announced "The Forbidden City: Beyond Space and Time," a new cultural heritage initiative that will present the history and splendor of China's Forbidden City to a global audience.

  IBM enhances its Matching Grants Program by offering solutions and services
The IBM Matching Grants Program has been enhanced to offer participating universities a selected set of solutions and services, in addition to hardware and software products.

  IBM, XJTU, and the Peoples Republic of China Ministry of Education open an Open Source research center focused on K12 education
The XJTU-IBM Linux Network Computer Joint Research Center will research and develop a low-cost national networked classroom teaching system to support education reform in the rural and remote regions of China.
