The USGS serves the Nation by providing reliable scientific information to
describe and understand the Earth;
minimize loss of life and property from natural disasters;
manage water, biological, energy, and mineral resources; and
enhance and protect our quality of life.
Our future goals include combining and enhancing USGS' diverse programs, capabilities, and
talents and increase customer involvement to strengthen our scientific leadership and contribution
to the resolution of complex issues.
Meet the Folks at the Flagstaff Science Center
The USGS Flagstaff Science Center employs approximately 200 people. Around one-fourth are research scientists;
the rest are highly trained and skilled technicians and support staff.
Our History & Our Future
Since the late 1970's, projects carried out at the Flagstaff Field Center have contributed to all aspects
of the USGS mission, and a similarly diverse agenda is expected for the foreseeable future. Before the late 1970's,
Center activities were more tightly focused on a high-priority national goal of space exploration.
