Taken from the Veterans Health Administration Highlights dated May 3, 2002

Dr. Edward A. Neuwelt, a medical researcher at Portland Veterans Affairs Medical Center and professor of neurosurgery and neurology in the Oregon Health and Science University School of Medicine has been awarded a $3.7 million award from the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke. The Javits Neuroscience Investigator Award, named in honor of the late U.S. Senator Jacob Javits of New York, will provide funding for continued research into Neuwelt’s approach to opening the brain’s natural barrier to foreign agents for the delivery of chemotherapy drugs to brain tumors.

Dr. Neuwelt pioneered a unique method for administering chemotherapy to brain tumors in the 1980’s. By temporarily disrupting the blood-brain barrier, Dr. Neuwelt discovered that he could more effectively target and administer chemotherapy to brain tumors.
