Williston, VT -- Officials report that 236 people have applied for disaster assistance and almost $415,500 has been issued in recovery grants and loans throughout four counties. President Bush declared a major disaster on July 12 in northern Vermont for flooding. The declared counties for aid to individuals, families, and businesses are: Franklin, Orleans, Lamoille, and Caledonia.
Aid available includes grants to help pay for temporary housing, emergency home repairs and other serious disaster-related expenses. Low-interest loans from the U.S. Small Business Administration are the primary form of assistance available to cover residential and business losses not fully compensated by insurance.
Vermont Emergency Management (VEM) and the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) report the total assistance to individuals, families and businesses is $415,477. "We are glad to see Vermonters making use of the disaster programs available," said Tom Davies, lead federal official in charge of the recovery
Tom Torti, the lead state official for disaster recovery, said, "This state administration welcomes the federal assistance that is now available to the people of Vermont. We remain committed to ensuring that every qualified family and business receives the help they need."
Individuals, families and business owners who suffered losses in the designated counties because of the flooding that occurred June 5 through 13 should apply for disaster assistance by calling FEMA's toll free number 1-800-621-FEMA (3362). The TTY number for those who are hearing- or speech-impaired is 1-800-462-7585.
