ORLANDO, Fla. -- Hurricane Gustav's impact on other areas has strained the Federal Emergency Management Agency's phone registration system and Floridians are having trouble getting through.
Although more resources are being added to handle calls, those affected by Tropical Storm Fay and continued flooding can benefit from the following few tips during this busy period:
- Call during off hours and weekends since registration is open by phone from 7 a.m. to midnight daily, until further notice. You can call FEMA, toll free, at 800-621-FEMA (3362). The deaf, hard of hearing and speech impaired may call the TTY line at 800-462-7585 and apply. Multilingual operators are available to speak to applicants.
- Applicants can avoid busy signals by registering online anytime at www.fema.gov. Computers are typically available at local libraries. A trusted relative with computer access can also apply on your behalf via the Internet. Follow-up information, however, will only be provided to an applicant.
- Applicants can also register at Disaster Recovery Centers located throughout Central and Southeast Florida.
- Before calling, have your personal information available. You'll need a Social Security number (including spouse's), address, ZIP code and directions to the damaged property. You'll also need a daytime telephone number.
FEMA coordinates the federal government's role in preparing for, preventing, mitigating the effects of, responding to, and recovering from all domestic disasters, whether natural or man-made, including acts of terror.
