ATLANTA, Ga. -- Individuals and families in Brevard County who sustained uninsured or underinsured losses related to Tropical Storm Fay may now apply for federal disaster assistance. The process requires only a few minutes and is a vital step in the recovery process.

Those affected can register online anytime at www.fema.gov. They also can call 800-621-FEMA (3362) or 800-462-7585 (TTY) for people with hearing or speech impairment. The toll-free telephone numbers will operate from 7 a.m. to midnight (EDT) seven days a week until further notice. Multilingual operators are available to assist with the application process.

The county was declared a major disaster area by President Bush following a request by Florida  Gov. Charlie Crist. Officials with the State Emergency Management Team and the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) said community relations and recovery program specialists have been deployed to the area and are ready to assist.

FEMA coordinates the federal government's role in preparing for, preventing, mitigating the effects of, responding to, and recovering from all domestic disasters, whether natural or man-made, including acts of terror.
