DENVER, Co. -- The deadline to apply for Disaster Unemployment Assistance (DUA) is approaching, according to federal and state officials.

The DUA application deadline for those who live or work in Larimer and Weld counties is June 27. The program provides unemployment benefits and re-employment services to individuals who have become unemployed because of the severe storms and tornadoes on May 22, 2008. Benefits begin with the date the individual was unemployed due to the disaster incident and can extend up to 26 weeks after the Presidential declaration date.

These benefits are made available to individuals not covered by other unemployment compensation programs, such as farmers, migrant or seasonal workers, and those who may be self-employed. To be eligible for benefits individuals must be unemployed or unable to do business as a direct result of the disaster, whether they live in Larimer and Weld counties, or outside the disaster area.

Anyone who thinks he or she may be eligible is encouraged to contact the Colorado Department of Labor and Employment:

Outside the Denver Metro area: 1-800-388-5515
Within the Denver Metro area: 303-318-9000
