INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. -- After the disaster, many people filled out damage reports with state or local emergency agencies. Many thought they were registering with FEMA. They were not.
You can only register with FEMA by phone or online at www.fema.gov. If you haven't made that call to FEMA at 1-800- 621-FEMA (3362), you are not registered for disaster assistance through FEMA or the Small Business Administration (SBA). For those with hearing or speech impairments the TTY number is 1-800-462-7585. You can register 24 hours a day, seven days a week until further notice.
When you call, you simply need your social security number- if you have one, your address, and a description of your damages. If you have homeowner's insurance, have the name of the insurance company and policy number.
After you register, whether you are a homeowner, renter or business, FEMA will send an application to your mail box. It may include a loan application from the Small Business Administration (SBA). If you need help filling out the FEMA application, just call the FEMA Helpline: It's the same as the teleregistration number, 1-800-621-FEMA (3362). A specialist, answering FEMA's Helpline, will walk you through the process. If you need assistance in completing your SBA application, you may call the SBA Customer Service Center at 1-800-695-2955.Or you can go to your nearest Disaster Recovery Center where people there will be glad to help you.
