FEMA Disaster Recovery Centers Will Close On Friday

LONG BEACH, Miss. -- The last day Disaster Recovery Centers (DRC) in Hancock and Wilkinson counties will be open is Friday, October 24, 2008.

Residents of Adams, Hancock, Harrison, Washington and Wilkinson counties who suffered damage from Hurricane Gustav during the period of Aug. 28 to Sept. 8, 2008, are encouraged to visit a DRC if they need assistance or information regarding their application for disaster assistance. Representatives from FEMA, MEMA, the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) and voluntary agencies are available at the centers.

The DRCs are open Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturday, 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Their locations are:

Nov. 25, 2008 is the deadline to register for federal and state disaster assistance. Individuals who have not done so yet can register for disaster assistance by calling
1-800-621-FEMA (3362). Individuals with hearing- or speech impairment should call TTY-1-800-462-7585. FEMA operators are available everyday, 24 hours, until further notice. Registration also can be completed online at www.fema.gov.

Information on SBA loan applications also is available by calling the toll-free SBA Customer Service Center, Monday through Friday, from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m., and Saturday and Sunday, 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. at 1-800-659-2955, or visit the SBA web site at www.sba.gov, or by emailing disastercustomerservice@sba.gov.  Disaster victims can visit SBA's secure Web site at disasterloan.sba.gov/ela/ to apply online for disaster loans.

FEMA's temporary housing assistance and grants for public transportation expenses, medical and dental expenses, and funeral and burial expenses do not require individuals to apply for an SBA loan.

FEMA coordinates the federal government's role in preparing for, preventing, mitigating the effects of, responding to, and recovering from all domestic disasters, whether natural or man-made, including acts of terror.
