A Letter from Mrs. Bush

Dear Friends,

In his 2005 State of the Union address, President Bush launched the Helping America’s Youth initiative to help young people build self-respect and acquire the skills and knowledge they need to make the most of their lives. When the President asked me to lead this initiative, I enthusiastically agreed.

I have traveled throughout our country to talk with children of all ages and to see firsthand some of the programs that are making a great difference in their lives. The common element is the personal intervention and commitment of an adult who shows them that they matter and that they have what it takes to succeed.

The President and I want every child to be surrounded by caring adults because when adults believe in children, children learn to believe in themselves. Through the Helping America’s Youth initiative, we’re encouraging action in the most important places in a child’s life – family, faith, school, and community.

President Bush and I hope the information in this website is inspiring and helpful to you as you work to help the young people in your community avoid risky behavior today and reach their full potential tomorrow.

Sincerely, Laura Bush
