In brief

The Michigan Model for Health® is the nationally acclaimed school health education program. It is currently being implemented in over 90% of Michigan's public schools and more that 200 private and charter schools. Through the Michigan Model®, comprehensive school health now reaches over 30 states, foreign countries, universities and medical schools.

A little history

The Michigan Model® was established in 1985, as a cooperative effort of seven state agencies: Public Health, Education, Mental Health, Social Services, Office of Highway Safety Planning, State Police and Substance Abuse. These agencies agreed to collaborate in providing an efficient delivery mechanism for key disease prevention and health promotion messages.

A network of 115 professional and volunteer groups worked with the program to create age-appropriate curricula for students in kindergarten through eighth grade. In 1990, the State Steering Committee, representing the seven state agencies which launched the program, began the process of revising and improving the existing lessons. Teachers, parents and content experts were invited to review the material share their expertise and perspectives.

Today the Michigan Model® curriculum facilitates skills-based learning through lessons that include a variety of teaching and learning techniques, skill development and practice, and building positive lifestyle behaviors in students and families. Teacher training in the implementation of the Model ensures that students and their schools as a whole get maximum benefits from this carefully structured program.

Benefits to teachers and schools

The joint resources of collaborating agencies have created a comprehensive school health education package with advantages for states, schools and students:

Central Michigan University's Educational Materials Center (EMC) is the official distribution center for the Michigan Model®. The Center works with the Michigan Model® State Steering Committee to keep materials current and to extend the network of concerned educators, parents, school districts and state agencies committed to providing the best possible health education curriculum for grades K-12.
