The Council receives thousands of calls like this one each year. Among the most common concerns
are those regarding someone's personal drug use, fears about a family member or friend's drug use,
drug/alcohol assessments, treatment options, 12-step programs, community service, court-mandated
education classes, and general alcohol and other drug questions.
Information and Referral Specialists listen and explore the situation in order to help connect
the caller to the best resources for his or her circumstances. This is challenging under certain
circumstances, such as when the caller doesn't have insurance or transportation. The Specialists
are equipped with a sophisticated database that offers information and referrals for the wide
variety of alcohol and drug-related issues presented by callers.
The Information and Referral Program has been an ongoing service at the Council since it was
established in 1946. Substance abuse is the number one preventable health problem in America.
The Information and Referral Program is "on-call" to provide caring support and resources to
those in need.
