Youth Leaders Corner

Start HereIf you are willing and interested in spreading the Stop Bullying Now! message in your school and in your community!

Ask yourself, where is bullying happening around you everyday?  Become a "detective" for a week to find answers to these questions:

  • Where do you see kids bullying other kids?
  • When and where does it happen in school?
  • When and where does it happen in out-of-school places?
  • Who is involved – kids who bully, their followers, kids who are bullied, and possible defenders?
  • Are there adults around who can help?
  • Do you think they even know bullying is happening?
Write down what you find out.

Talk with adults and friends at school.

Have adults in your school talked with students about trying to stop bullying?

  • If the answer is YES, talk with an adult in charge to see how you and other students can get involved.  Adults need students’ ideas!  Maybe you could help to set up a student advisory group that can meet during student "club" or "activity" times.  That's what KB and her friends did.  Read about it on her blog!  Maybe you could share some information from this web site with adults at your school.  Ask them if they've seen information on the Educators' Corner.
  • If the answer is NO, or if you aren't sure, maybe you and some friends could talk with a favorite teacher, school counselor, or your principal about helping to start a program at your school.  Show them around the StopBullyingNow! web site or print out some information from the web site for them.  Begin at the Educators' Corner.

Talk with adults and friends in after-school activities.

Bullying doesn't just happen at school, of course.  Think of how you can help to Stop Bullying Now! in your after-school activities, like sports leagues, scouting troops, faith-based youth groups or drama groups.

Make the case for bullying prevention by sharing what you've learned with a trusted adult, your parents, and friends who will support you in helping to Stop Bullying Now!  Tell them to go to the Stop Bullying Now! web site to find out about bullying and ways to stop it.

Here are some specific ideas for spreading the word about bullying in after-school activities:

Sports leagues

  • Does your league or team have rules against bullying?  If not, or if you’re not sure, talk with your coaches about making clear rules against bullying for your practices and games.
  • Report bullying to an adult anytime that you see it or hear about it.
  • Are there any kids on your team who are new or who don't seem to have any good friends?  Look for ways to make them feel more welcome and be a friend to them.
  • Talk with your coaches to see if you could print anti-bullying rules or messages on your team’s t-shirts or jerseys.
  • Show that you’re a good sport during and after games by the way you act.

Scouting groups

  • Talk with your leaders about how stopping bullying fits into your group’s goals to build friendships, create strong leaders and help your community.
  • Are there kids in your group who are by themselves a lot of the time? How could you be a friend to them?
  • Tell an adult anytime that you see bullying or hear about it.
  • Work with others in your group to teach kids and adults in your community about bullying.  Meet with other scouting groups, other youth organizations, and adult groups (such as Kiwanis or Rotary Clubs).  Use public service announcements and other Stop Bullying Now! materials to help spread the word.

Faith-based youth groups

  • Talk with youth and adults in your group about messages from the Stop Bullying Now! webisodes and materials—the importance of treating others with kindness, being a friend to those who are lonely, reporting bullying to adults.  Talk about how these messages fit into your faith community’s teachings.
  • Have youth and adult members of your youth group talk about bullying with younger kids in your faith community.  (They look up to you!).  Show and discuss the webisodes or public service announcements.

Community theater/music

Spread the message to Stop Bullying Now! through the your community theater troop, chorus, or band.  How?

  • Find a play with an anti-bullying message to perform…or write one yourself!  (Check out the Stop Bullying Now! web site—especially the webisodes—for ideas.)  Perform the play to members of your community or to students in school.  Afterwards, help to lead a discussion about ways to stop bullying.
  • Find songs that have bullying messages (like "Don’t Laugh At Me" by Peter Yarrow) and perform them at school or in your community.
  • Make up a song (rap? rock? country?) with an anti-bullying message.  (The Stop Bullying Now! theme song is really short. Write a few verses to go with it!)  Perform the song live to students or others in your community, or make a video of your group performing your song.
