Yellowstone National Park - Winter Use

Yellowstone, America's oldest national park, was established March 1, 1872. This magnificent national park is the home of Old Faithful and the majority of the world's most extraordinary geysers and hot springs as well as the underlying volcanic activity that sustains them. With its spectacular mountain wildland, Yellowstone is also home to an impressive variety of thriving wildlife including grizzly bears, wolves, free-ranging herds of bison and elk. The park boasts many stunning sites and historic buildings that are centuries-old and reflect the unique heritage of the nation's first national park.

To allow for more enjoyable winter activities at the park, the Bush administration has implemented a Temporary Winter Use Plan. This plan stipulates the use of more environmentally friendly snowmobiles that are much quieter and cleaner than older models. Under the managed winter use program, daily limits on the number of snowmobiles have been imposed, advance reservations are recommended, and all snowmobiles must be accompanied by a commercial guide. In addition, all snowmobiles used in the park would be required to meet NPS best available technology (BAT) requirements. The plan will be in effect for three winters, allowing snowmobile and snowcoach use through the winter of 2006-2007. The temporary winter use management plan ensures that resources are protected, gives visitors, employees and residents of the park's gateway communities the information they want and need to plan for the near term, and will help minimize economic impacts on gateway communities. A new long-term winter use planning process is underway.
