Bush Administration Assists Oregon With Fighting Flagtail Fire

Washington, D. C. -- FEMA Director Joe M. Allbaugh today approved a Fire Management Assistance Grant for the state of Oregon to help cover the costs of fighting the Flagtail fire in Grant County.
Director Allbaugh approved the grant after the fire destroyed two structures and threatened 40 others as well as a major power line near the community of Bear Valley. The fire, which started on July 12, has burned more than 7,000 acres and has threatened to cause evacuations.
"This is going to be a long fire season," said Allbaugh. "The Bush Administration and FEMA will be with Oregon every step of the way to help the state fight these wildfires and protect lives and property."
In addition to the Flagtail fire, FEMA firefighting funds have been authorized for Oregon for the Squire Peak fire in Jackson County, the Winter fire in Lake County and the Eyerle fire in Jefferson County.
Federal fire management assistance is provided through the President's Disaster Relief Fund and made available by FEMA to assist in fighting fires that threaten to cause a major disaster. The assistance will pay up to 75 percent of the state's eligible firefighting costs under an approved grant for managing, mitigating and controlling designated fires.
Eligible state firefighting costs covered by the aid can include expenses for field camps; equipment use, repair and replacement; tools, materials and supplies; and mobilization and demobilization activities.
