ATLANTA, Ga. -- The Disaster Recovery Center (DRC) at the National Guard Armory in Louisville, opened to assist people who suffered losses from the May 11-12 tornadoes, will close permanently at 7 p.m. Wednesday, June 4. However, this does not mean an end to the opportunity to apply for federal assistance or to obtain help with an application or appeal, according to the Georgia Emergency Management Agency (GEMA) and the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).

"The Louisville DRC has given people in Jefferson County a convenient location to talk in-person with recovery specialists," said GEMA Deputy State Coordinating Officer Joe McKinney. "DRCs remain open in nine other counties and people can visit any of them to get help."

A list of open DRCs is below. The list is found online by entering the search term "disaster recovery centers" at www.gema.ga.gov.

Among the services at a DRC are:

"Even after the centers close, assistance remains available every day via a toll-free phone call to the FEMA Helpline as well as online at the FEMA Web site," said FEMA's Federal Coordinating Officer Jeff Bryant. "People can continue to use these resources to apply for aid, follow up on their applications or appeal a decision."

FEMA officials encourage affected homeowners, renters and business owners, if possible, to register for assistance before they visit a DRC. FEMA's toll free telephone registration and help line,
800-621-FEMA (3362), is open from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. local time seven days a week. For speech- or hearing-impaired applicants, the TTY number is 800-462-7585. Applicants can register online any time at www.fema.gov.
