FEMA and KDEM Urge Residents to "Be Ready"

TOPEKA, Kan. -- In support of Kansas Severe Weather Awareness Week, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security's Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and the Kansas Division of Emergency Management (KDEM) is encouraging residents to take time to prepare for severe weather and the disasters they may bring.
Kansans can successfully prepare for emergencies by following the Ready Campaigns three easy steps:
- Prepare an emergency supply kit;
- Make a family emergency plan; and
- Be informed about the kinds of emergencies that can happen in your area and their appropriate responses.
To help get started, the Ready Campaign is issuing a checklist of the leading items needed in a basic emergency supply kit for the home or business. These items include: water, food, radio, flashlight, firstaid kit, whistle, moist towelettes, garbage bags and plastic ties, wrench or pliers, local maps, and personal items.

Ready also suggests creating a smaller, portable kit for your home or office in case you need to evacuate immediately. The Web site includes free information, checklists and guidelines about the two other key components of preparedness - developing a family emergency plan and being informed.
FEMA coordinates the federal government's role in preparing for, preventing, mitigating the effects of, responding to, and recovering from all domestic disasters, whether natural or man-made, including acts of terror.
