AUGUSTA, Maine - Only one week remains for northern Maine residents and business owners who sustained damage from the flooding occurring April 28-May 14 to apply for disaster assistance. The deadline to apply is Tuesday, July 8.

“Since the May 9 declaration, the disaster recovery process has successfully ensured that more than $1 million in state and federal aid has been disbursed to Aroostook and Penobscot County residents affected by the flooding," said Ginnie Ricker, state coordinating officer of the Maine Emergency Management Agency (MEMA). "There’s still time to register, but with just a week left, we urge residents not to put it off any longer."

There are two simple ways to begin the application process. Affected residents may call FEMA's toll-free number, 1-800-621-FEMA (3362) or TTY 1-800-462-7585 for those with special speech or hearing needs. Both numbers are available from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday through Friday. Residents with Internet access have the option to apply on the agency's Web site at www.fema.gov. Valuable recovery information is also available on the Web site.

“Homeowners, renters and business owners are receiving grants and low interest loans to restore their property. We want to help everyone who is eligible. We remind them that there are several forms of disaster assistance available to help them recover, but they must call to apply by July 8,” said Federal Coordinating Officer Phil Parr.

Disaster officials also stated that residents waiting for a final insurance settlement should contact the FEMA Helpline at the same numbers above if their claim is paid or for any other updates to their claim information. If there have been changes to contact information, applicants should call the Helpline to ensure they receive their assistance as quickly as possible.
