Job Corps Expedited Enrollment

In response to Hurricanes Katrina and Rita, the Job Corps is expediting enrollment for eligible evacuees, ages 16-24, interested in a residential job training and education program. Like scholarships, the expedited enrollment provides students the opportunity to earn their high school diploma or GED plus career skills, as well as providing housing, clothing, meals, medical care, and a small stipend. Job Corps offers training in over 100 occupations such as construction, health care, automotive, business technology, and culinary arts. This initiative allows admission counselors to expedite enrollment processes, including transportation to a Job Corps center. If an eligible individual has lost his or her identification, e.g., a driver's license, social security card, or birth certificate, the young person may self-certify until documentation can be replaced.

Eligibility

• 16-24 years of age
• Economically disadvantaged
• Goal of acquiring job training and educational credentials
• Willing to relocate to a residential campus.

The Job Corps has a zero tolerance for drugs, alcohol and violence.

Opportunity

Job Corps has over 4,000 immediately available residential student slots for hurricane victims. Job Corps provides support and assistance to graduates for 12 months after successful completion of the program including assistance finding a job, housing or transportation. Students may reside at Job Corps for up to 2 years while completing their course of education and occupational skills training. There is also some availability for advanced training in partnership with Community Colleges. In addition to career training, students also earn their High School Diploma or GED if needed.
