Consumer Complaints

File a consumer complaint online | Search consumer complaints | Top Ten list

Attorney General Jay Nixon works hard to protect consumers from unfair and deceptive trade practices by aggressively enforcing Missouri's Merchandising Practices Law. In addition to filing criminal charges and civil lawsuits against unscrupulous businesses and individuals, the Attorney General's Office mediates complaints between businesses and consumers.

If you believe you have been the victim of unfair or deceptive trade practices, check out the Know Your Rights publication. It contains helpful tips that will assist you in resolving your complaint. If you still need help, file a complaint with the Attorney General's Office:

File a consumer complaint online

The Consumer Complaint Form is available for online submission. Simply complete the online form and click on the button titled "Submit Online Complaint Form."

File a consumer complaint by mail

The Consumer Complaint Form is available in pdf format. If possible, please complete the PDF form by computer. If you don't fill it out by computer, type or hand-print clearly in dark ink. Incomplete or unclear forms will be returned. Be sure to enclose copies of important documents concerning your transaction such as contracts, invoices, warranties, brochures and canceled checks. Do not send originals.

You can fill out the PDF-formatted Consumer Complaint form while browsing the Web. However, you will not be able to save the completed form so remember to print extra copies for your files.

File a consumer complaint by phone

Consumer complaints may also be filed by phone using the Consumer Protection Hotline at 1-800-392-8222.

Know MO

Missouri consumers now have a tool to help them in making decisions about buying goods or contracting for services.

"Know MO" enables consumers to look up complaints the Attorney General's Office has received about individuals and businesses.

Attorney General Nixon is looking out for you

The Attorney General has the authority to investigate business or trade practices and take legal action on behalf of the state to stop fraudulent or deceptive practices. In 2007, Attorney General Nixon's Consumer Protection Division returned $18.2 million in restitution to consumers through legal actions and mediation. We rely on consumers to act as our partners in rooting out fraud and helping us bring criminals and scammers to justice.

Private legal actions

Because the Attorney General's Office brings enforcement actions on behalf of the state, not individual consumers, it is prohibited by law from providing legal advice to you. If you want to preserve any private legal rights you might have, you may wish to contact a private attorney. To see what other steps you can take to resolve a problem, review the Consumers, Take Action publication.
