Real estate agent, loan officers among those indicted for $12.6 million mortgage fraud
KANSAS CITY - A real estate agent and two former loan officers in Lee’s Summit, Mo., are among 17 defendants indicted by a federal grand jury for their roles in a $12.6 million mortgage fraud scheme that involved 25 residential properties in Lee’s Summit and Raymore, Mo. Angela R. Clark, 40, James F. Simpson, 39, Cynthia D. Jordan, 41, and Stefan M. Guerra, 30, all of Lee’s Summit, Mo., Ronald E. Brown, Jr., 39, of Gladstone, Mo., Enrico J. McClain, 36, of Kansas City, Mo., Daryle A. Edwards, 37, and Leon T. Jones, 42, both of Olathe, Kan., Gerald D. Williams, 47, and his wife, Judith E. Williams, 47, both of Omaha, Neb., Willie Charles Cadenhead, Jr., 38, of Grandview, Mo., Jerome Shade Howard, 39, of Anaheim, Calif., Michael Conrad Smith, 47, of Lancaster, Calif., Cheryl Ann Romero, 50, of Santa Fe Springs, Calif., Anahit Nshanian, 29, of Long Beach, Calif., Mark Whitney Jackson, 48, of Woodland Hills, Calif., and Steven M. Salas, 35, of Hacienda Heights, Calif.,were charged in a 34-count indictment returned by a federal grand jury in Kansas City, Mo.

KC man indicted for forced sex trafficking, child pornography
KANSAS CITY - A Kansas City, Mo., man was indicted by a federal grand jury on charges related to the commercial sex trafficking of four female victims and the sexual exploitation of a fifth female victim, who was a minor. Michael L. Buck, 35, of Kansas City, was charged in a seven-count indictment returned by a federal grand jury in Kansas City. A motion for detention has been filed with the court, seeking to have Buck detained in federal custody until his trial.

Federal employee indicted for $600,000 embezzlement
KANSAS CITY - A federal government employee was indicted by a federal grand jury for embezzling nearly $600,000 from the government. Michael T. Harrington, 44, of Lee’s Summit, Mo., was charged in a four-count indictment returned by a federal grand jury in Kansas City. Harrington is employed as a supervisory accountant at GSA.

Physicians group signs $1 million settlement agreement
SPRINGFIELD - The United States has reached a $1 million settlement that resolves claims against a Springfield, Mo., physicians group, related to its contract with Lester E. Cox Medical Centers. Ferrell-Duncan Clinic, Inc., a medical practice comprised of approximately 100 physicians, has agreed to pay $1 million to resolve the government’s claims related to Medicare payments received under Ferrell-Duncan’s contract with Cox Medical Centers.

Former Clay County sheriff's deputy pleads guilty to using excessive force, obstructing justice
KANSAS CITY - A former deputy with the Clay County Sheriff’s Department pleaded guilty in federal court to violating a defendant’s civil rights by using unreasonable force during an arrest and to obstruction of justice. Donald A. Devens, 59, of Smithville, Mo., pleaded guilty before U.S. District Judge Dean Whipple to the federal charges that were filed against him on May 27, 2008.

Election officer appointed to oversee election day program
KANSAS CITY - Assistant United States Attorney Linda Parker Marshall will lead the efforts of the U.S. Attorney’s Office in the Western District of Missouri in connection with the Justice Department's nationwide election day program for the Nov. 4, 2008, general elections. Marshall has been appointed to serve as the District Election Officer, and in that capacity is responsible for overseeing the district's handling of complaints of election fraud and voting rights abuses in consultation with the Justice Department.
