ANA Fast Facts

ANA promotes the goal of economic and social self-sufficiency for American Indians, Alaska Natives, Native Hawaiians and the peoples of Guam, American Samoa, and the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands.

ANA is the only Federal agency providing grants, training and technical assistance to all Native Americans including:

562 federally recognized Tribes
Incorporated non-federally recognized Tribes
American Indian and Alaska Native Organizations
Native Hawaiian Non-profit Organizations
Native populations throughout the Pacific basin

Project Funding Fast Facts:

ANA administers approximately 220 projects annually, and turns over approximately one-third (1/3) of its grant portfolio every year.
All ANA grantees are required to provide a 20% non-federal match, with the following exceptions: American Samoa, Guam, or the Common Wealth of the Northern Mariana Islands. (Per Program Announcment - Under ANA Administrative Policy: An applicant must provide a 20 percent non-Federal match of the approved project costs. Applications originating from American Samoa, Guam, or the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands are covered under section 501(d) of Public Law (P.L.) 95-134, as amended (48 U.S.C. 1469a), under which the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) waives any requirement for matching funds under $200,000 (including in-kind contributions).
In FY 2008, ANA had a demand for project funding in excess of $150 million. Out of 332 applications, 39% received funding.
In FY 2008, ANA awarded 132 new competitive grants totaling $21,998,952, and 79 continuation grants totaling $15,476,028.
The breakdown of FY 2008 new grants is as follows: 59 Social and Economic Development Strategies (SEDS), 12 Healthy Marriage, 8 SEDS Alaska, 42 Language, 1 Environmental Mitigation, and 10 Environmental Regulatory.
In FY 2008, the average ANA grant amount was $166,669.
The location breakdown of FY 2008 is as follows: 17% in Alaska, 6% in the Pacific Basin, and 77% in the lower 48 States.
135 Peer Panel Reviewers evaluated 279 FY 2008 ANA applications.
In partnership with the Indian Health Service, ANA has trained over 700 youth and adults in Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) and First-Responder Activities.
