Twin_Span_Bridge_Project:_ The new Interstate 10 Twin Span Bridge over Lake Pontchartrain is being constructed to replace the existing Twin Span Bridge, which was ravaged by Hurricane Katrina. Katrina's powerful storm surge had knocked many of the bridge's concrete segments into the lake. To prevent this type of damage from occurring again, we must build a new bridge. The Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development designed the new bridge to be higher, bigger and stronger that the existing bridge and to last well into the 22nd century.

The new bridge, is being built 300 feet to the east of the current bridge, will have an elevation of 30 feet, which is 21 feet higher than the old bridge, and an 80-foot high-rise section near the Slidell side to allow for marine traffic. The increased elevation will allow the bridge to withstand a much higher storm surge.

The new bridge also will allow for a 50 percent increase in volume. The 60-foot width of each span will include three 12-foot lanes and two 12-foot shoulders on each side.

The project, which is being entirely funded with federal dollars, is the largest public works project in the history of Louisiana at a cost of $803 million. The new I-10 Twin Span bridge is scheduled to be complete in 2011. For more information, please visit www.twinspanbridge.com.
