To support DesignAlabama Mayors’ Design Summit, a workshop that provides mayors with the opportunity to work with design professionals on specific issues facing their communities. Communities from throughout Alabama, particularly those with less than 20,000 people, will be selected to participate.

Miles College
Fairfield, Alabama
To support the commission of commemorative civil rights sculptures designed by artist Tina Allen. The artwork will be a tribute to the four girls killed in the historic 1963 Birmingham church bombing.

Rural Members Association, Inc.
Aliceville, Alabama
To support the Freedom Creek Blues Festival. The event will be held at the home of Willie King in rural Old Memphis, Alabama. Proposed artists include Jody Williams, Jerry "Boogie" McCain, and Willie King and The Liberators.

ALASKA

Pier One Theatre, Inc.
Homer, Alaska
To support violinist Paul Rosenthal, flutist Gary Stroutsos, and conductor/composer Bob Richardson as guest artists of the Kenai Peninsula Orchestra during the Summer Music Festival. Mr. Stroutsos will also participate in a community lecture and performance prior to the concerts.

ARIZONA

Borderlands Theater Teatro Fronterizo, Inc.
Tucson, Arizona
To support the Native American Initiative, including a mainstage production with student matinees of Dust Eaters by Julie Jensen. The project will also support the commission of a play about the lives of American and Mexican Indians who live on the Tucson/Mexico border.

To support a performance by musician Robert Mirabal and the Rare Tribal Mob, serving surrounding Navajo and Hopi Nations populations. Mirabel blends traditional American tribal music with influences from the contemporary cultural life of American Indians.

To support Experiencing the Arts, a series of multidisciplinary workshops led by guest artists. Activities include the creation of a wall-sized community map, workshops with basketweavers, and production of a short dance piece.

To support the series of readings and discussions titled Community and Words: Deepening the Dialogue. Authors Leslie Marmon Silko, Luis Urrea, Naomi Shihab Nye, and Sherman Alexie will present readings of their work and participate in public discussions.

To support the exhibits of works by artists from Tucson and Phoenix representing the Chicano culture of rural southwestern Arizona. Exhibited artists will give workshops about how their art relates to the rich diversity of the indigenous community.

To support the Annual San Francisco South Asian International Film Festival.
The festival will screen films and host workshops by media artists from India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, England, Canada, and the United States.

African American Art and Culture Complex

To support the AfroSolo International, a series of four presentations by solo artists. Spoken word artists Lemn Sissay, Yossi Vassa, Danny Beaty, and Aya de Leon will participate in performances and community workshops.

API Cultural Center
Oakland, California
To support the Lunar New Year Festival. Featuring Bay Area artists, festival activities will showcase artistry of the Pan-Asian community, including Chinese, Korean, and Vietnamese traditions.

Arab American Congress of Silicon Valley

To support the Arab Film Festival. The festival will screen independently-produced feature films and documentaries that explore Arab history, culture, and contemporary life.

To support the U.S. debut concert of Algerian Amazigh vocalist and musician, Takfarinas. Takfarinas’s concert and outreach activities will increase awareness of the Amazigh people, who have lived for thousands of years on land in Morocco, Libya, and Algeria.

Asian Pacific Islander Cultural Center
San Francisco, California
To support the Annual United States of Asian America Festival. The festival will present arts programs featuring contemporary Asian American artists and arts organizations at various San Francisco venues.

Collage Dance Theatre
Los Angeles, California
To support My Beowulf, a contemporary rendition of the Old English fable. Featuring the ensemble One Step Ahead, participants will create a work that places the fable of Beowulf in contemporary hip-hop culture.

Community Partners
Los Angeles, California
To support LA Commons in MacArthur Park. LA Commons will engage youth of a largely Central American immigrant population in the creation of public art projects. Local guest artists will be selected to lead the youth through the design and fabrication process.

Crucible
Oakland, California
To support the design and installation of a wheelchair accessible ramp for the Crucible Facility in West Oakland. Youth from McClymonds High School will work with experienced Crucible artists to use welding, torch cutting, and blacksmithing techniques in building the ramp.

Developmental Disabilities Service Organization, Inc.
Sacramento, California
To support the design, fabrication, and installation of ceramic mosaic murals in the La Sierra Community Center. Artists Kyveta Dupree and Valentino Fernandez will lead adults with disabilities and special education students in the creation of the murals.

Great Leap, Inc.
Los Angeles, California
To support Collaboratory, an intensive performing arts workshop for emerging artists of color taught by guest artists. The workshops culminate with three performances of new work created by the participants.

La Pocha Nostra Intercultural Performance & Community Arts

To support the development of a new work, La Nostalgia/Nostegee. In collaboration with Native American multimedia artist James Luna, writer Guillermo Gomez-Pena will develop a theatrical production reflecting similarities between their Latin and Native American experiences.

Oakland Interfaith Gospel Choir
Oakland, California
To support the Traditional Music Workshop, offering such classes as vocal technique, songwriting, and auditioning techniques. The main teaching framework will incorporate traditional African American spirituals. The project will also offer an evening musical featuring acclaimed local talent including Edwin Hawkins.

Hartford, Connecticut
To support marketing and productions costs for the Guitar Under the Stars Festival. An evening of Spanish/Latin flavor guitar music featuring The Hartford Festival Orchestra and guitarist Daniel Salazar will be promoted to attract visitors to downtown Hartford's recently developed access to the Connecticut River.

COLORADO

Steamboat Springs, Colorado
To support the production of Falstaff and related outreach activities. The performances and educational programs featuring nationally recognized guest artists are intended to make opera more accessible to this rural northwestern Colorado community.

To support performances by conjuto musicians Jesse Borrego, Jr. and Rio Rami during the Chicano Music Festival. The project will also include workshops to foster interaction between local musicians and master performers.

DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA

To support the creation of a public artwork at the Earth Conservation Corps campus located in Southeast DC. Professional artists, including lead artist Byron Peck, and student apprentices will create and install mosaic sculptures depicting the history of the Anacostia waterway.

To support the Emmaus Grace Gospel Jubilee. The event features national and local talent performing for a largely senior citizen audience.

To support An Evening of Indian Music. Violinist L. Shankar, trained in the classical Carnatic music of southern India will be featured in a concert of traditional Indian music for Central Florida audiences.

To support a commissioned theatrical presentation, A Harvest of Voices. Core Ensemble, with guest playwright Akin Babatunde, will collect oral histories and local stories from residents in rural central Florida to create a full-length music theatre work.

To support the Pan African Bookfest & Cultural Conference. Project activities will include author readings, workshops, discussions, and literary character reenactments.

Fort Pierce Jazz Society, Inc.

To support jazz outreach to youth from local organizations including the Boys & Girls Club of St. Lucie County, Avenue D Boys Choir, and Teen Drum Line. Participating artists include jazz musician T.S. Monk, the Yellowjackets, organist Joey DeFranco, and vocalist Nicole Yarling.

Hollywood Art and Culture Center, Inc.

To support OceanDance featuring DanceBrazil. The free performances are presented on a stage constructed on Hollywood beach. DanceBrazil is renowned for its blend of capoeira, Afro-Brazilian, and modern dance.

GEORGIA

Albany Symphony Association, Inc.
Albany, Georgia
To support a series of concerts featuring a winner of the International Sphinx Competition, a competition that promotes the careers of African American and Latino string players. Concerts will be presented for students and community members located in a predominately rural area of Georgia.

American Jewish Committee
Atlanta, Georgia
To support the Atlanta Jewish Film Festival. The festival will include film presentations and panel discussions with filmmakers, actors, and media experts exploring themes of Jewish culture, heritage, and history. Last year’s festival included Lesley Ann Warren and Theodore Bikel as guest speakers.

To supporta dance concert Nu: Past and Present. Guest artists from the Atlanta Ballet, Dance China NY, and the Joffrey Ballet of Chicago will perform and participate in dance classes that will explore the issues facing contemporary Chinese women living in America.

To support the Spivey Hall Spring Bach Festival, a series of concerts and pre-performance lectures. Guest artists include Angela Hewitt, Christian Tetzlaff, Ensemble Corund, and Erik M. Suter who will perform for audiences drawn from eight metro-Atlanta communities.

To support Call My Name, a series of quilting workshops targeted towards the African American community. The workshops will encourage dialogue about the AIDS quilt and related issues of recovery and loss.

Sautee Nacoochee Community Association
Sautee Nacoochee, Georgia
To support the residency of writer and performer Jo Carson, in conjunction with her play Stories from a Goodly Portion of Beautiful Northeast Georgia. During Carson's residency, she will work with the cast, perform material from her previously written works, and present a community lecture.

Savannah College of Art and Design
Savannah, Georgia
To support the feasibility study and initial architectural planning for the adaptive reuse of the 1853 Central of Georgia Railway Depot as a museum. The building will serve as the future home of the Walter O. Evans Center for African American Studies and the Evans African American Art Collection. Evans recently donated the art collection, valued between $7 and $10 million, to the college.

HAWAII

Kauahea, Inc.
Wailuku, Hawaii
To support Na Mea No'eau, a series of workshops focusing on the making of hula implements, clothing, and adornments. Master Hawaiian artisans will participate in the project as workshop leaders.

IDAHO

Opera Idaho
Boise, Idaho
To support the production of Jacques Brel is Alive and Well and Living in Paris. The musical revue will be presented in Boise, and then remounted in the central Idaho town of Cascade.

ILLINOIS

Chinese Music Society
Woodbridge, Illinois
To support the opening concert of the Chinese Classical Orchestra's season. The program will include guest soloist Chen Yulin playing the gaohu, a Chinese bowed lute designed for Cantonese folk melodies and operas.

City of Bloomington
Bloomington, Illinois
To support Aquila Theater Company's presentation of The Canterbury Tales. The company will provide an evening performance with a pre-show discussion, as well as an abbreviated educational performance for school children.

Illinois Philharmonic Orchestra
Park Forest, Illinois
To support the performance of Beethoven's Symphony No. 9. The Philharmonic will collaborate with regional civic choruses for the production.

Jane Addams Juvenile Court Foundation
Chicago, Illinois
To support a tile mosaic project to be displayed in the Cook County Juvenile Court. Artist Carolyn Elaine will work with youth selected from the Cook County Probation Department's JumpStart Program to design and produce the mosaics.

Lira Ensemble
Chicago, Illinois
To support a series of holiday concerts featuring traditional Polish music. Performances will take place in Midwest cities with large Polish American populations, including Chicago, Detroit, and Milwaukee.

Natya Dance Theatre

To support a collaboration with guest artist Padmashree Smt. Kumundini Lakhia of India to create an evening length work. Lakhia is a master of Kathka, a classical dance tradition in India that weaves stories from dance, music, and mime.

To support the presentation of a jazz concert series. Duffy Jackson, The Jeff Hamilton Trio, and Johnny Trudell will each be presented during one of three festivals held in McDonough County.

To support the Crestmont Boys and Girls Club’s design of a public art work, the Bike Archway Project. Youth, parents, and residents of Crestmont, a public housing neighborhood, will work with professional artist Joe LeMantia to create a large scale sculpture using recycled scrap metal.

To support a residency featuring CINCO Brass Quintet. A series of programs for audiences throughout Northern Indiana will include residency programs presented in schools, community centers, public libraries, and museums.

To support a touring exhibition featuring oversized panels depicting accomplished traditional artists from Indiana. These panels will be displayed in libraries and featured artists will present their art at select venues.

To support the dance ensemble Momix in performances and residency. Momix will participate in a residency and movement classes with students from area schools.

To support a performance and workshop by violinist Gil Shaham. Shaham will also present a master class prior to the concert.

To support the Appalachian Circuit Writers. Kentucky authors will conduct readings of their work and provide writers' workshops at selected libraries in Eastern Kentucky.

Community radio station WMMT will work with traditional mountain arts presenters and communities across a five-county area in Southeastern Kentucky and Southwest Virginia to develop and implement a promotional campaign to benefit the region's traditional music, dance, and culture.

To support shadow sign interpreters for Shakespeare in Central Park. Specially trained sign interpreters will be on stage accompanying the actors’ dialogue during these performances.

To support the annual Maine Jewish Film Festival. Guest artists will be involved in post-film discussions and other programs including the Women Filmmakers Forum. Guest artists for 2006 included Arthur Joffé, Danae Elon, and Barbara Hammer.

To support an architectural design competition for a new building to house the Museum’s educational outreach activities.

VSA arts of Maine

To support A Matter of Perception, a juried exhibition of works by artists with disabilities. Additional activities include artist residencies, an artist panel discussion, and accessibility training for museum staff.

MARYLAND

Prince Theatre Foundation, Inc.

To support performances of Workin' on a Building: Compositions of Black Life on Maryland's Eastern Shore by Marlon Saunders. The multi-media jazz presentation will be performed for youth and include lectures by Saunders, an accomplished vocalist whose family has lived in the area for many generations.

To support a residency with wind quintet Imani Winds. Activities include special performances at an elementary school, a master class, a lecture/demonstration, and a concert.

To support a performance and lecture by spoken word artist KRS One. The project is part of the annual 3rd Eye Open Hip Hop Festival to be held in New Bedford for the benefit of local youth.

To support Boston Blues Week. The week-long event will include performances, among others, by Howlin’ Wolf guitarist Hubert Sumlin at the Hatch Memorial Band Shell on the Charles River Esplanade.

To support an opening event for the Jack Kerouac On the Road Scroll Exhibition. Selected artists and youth will participate in a public art exhibit, writing workshops and a spoken word performance highlighting the opening of an exhibition of work by Lowell's native son, Jack Kerouac.

To support the creation and display of a mural and traditional vejigante paper mache carnival masks of Puerto Rico. Artisan Angel Sanchez Ortiz will work with youth in the creation of the mural and masks that will be featured in the Nuestras Raices Harvest Festival.

New Bedford, Massachusetts
To support the presentation of Betsy, a work created in collaboration between New York-based Pregones and Kentucky-based Roadside theater companies. Artists from the theater companies will also work with at-risk youth to gather personal stories; explore the musical heritage of country, jazz, and Latin music with local bands; and work with school teachers to identify positive ways to engage students through music and drama.

To support the creation and installation of a mural titled Healing. Detroit artist, Hubert Massey will create a mural fresco for installation at the Detroit Receiving Hospital, which has a longstanding commitment to using the arts as a companion to patient healing.

To support the Fourth Annual Jazzin' on Jefferson Festival. The festival celebrates the jazz and blues heritage of Detroit and the nation by presenting local as well as nationally known artists.

Kalamazoo Symphony Orchestra
Kalamazoo, Michigan
To support the Orchestra’s Rural Community Tour featuring a guest artist. The orchestra, with featured guest soprano Alfrelynn Roberts, will perform in southwest Michigan towns.

Northwestern Michigan College Foundation
Traverse City, Michigan
To support a concert series to include world music from Africa and Japan. Connecting the series to planned exhibitions, the museum will present African Guitar Summit from Toronto, Japanese taiko ensemble Kiyoshi Nagata, and noted contemporary jazz pianist Bob James and the Shanghai Angels.

To support an artist residency with TerpTheatre entitled Sounds of Silence, designed to deepen arts engagement within the local deaf and hard-of-hearing communities. Residency activities will feature an audience development initiative including American Sign Language performances, actor training workshops, and a symposium.

To support the Waterfront Film Festival. Festival activities include question and answer sessions with filmmakers and an outdoor film screening.

MINNESOTA

Ananya Dance Theatre
Minneapolis, Minnesota
To support the premiere of Pipaashaa, an evening-length, Southeast Asian dance theater composition. The work presents a contemporary interpretation of the Indian classical dance form Odissi, and will include guest artist Shubha Mudgal, a classical Indian composer and vocalist.

To support Pangea, a series of performances, workshops, and exhibits that celebrates the region’s cultural density. Bosnian wood carver Izudin Becic will be one of the exhibited artists.

To support a concert by the St. Cloud Symphony Orchestra featuring guest clarinetist Burt Hara. At the historic Paramount Theatre in downtown St. Cloud, Mr. Hara will conduct a master class prior to the concert.

To support the Leach Theatre School Outreach Program. Rain Art Productions and San Jose Taiko will be presented in a series of performances for school children.

To support the Big Sky Dance Project featuring guest dance companies, the Alvin Ailey II Dance Company and the Aspen Santa Fe Ballet. The companies will participate in public performances, school shows, and master classes.

To support Bring IT On, a cultural marketing initiative. The technology based project will promote area cultural and arts events of the 25 partner organizations to the 400,000 residents in the surrounding region.

To support the Orchestra Residencies Program with violinist Midori. Residency activities include performances and workshops with both the Great Falls Symphony and the Great Falls Regional Youth Orchestra.

To support the exhibition of work by Nebraska native, painter Barbara Takenga. Additional programming will include a discussion with the artist, a Family Activity Day, and distance education sessions using webcast technology.

To support the Year of the Boar Celebration. Participants will include hammered dulcimer artist SiSi Chen, dancer Yao Zhong Zhang, and choreographer Min Zhou.

To support the presentation of Nuestra Musica, a festival of nuevomexicano music. The festival will feature performances by some of the state’s traditional musicians.

To support the Youth Mural Project. Students will be paired with professional artists, local historians, and community elders to produce murals that express aspects of the cultural history of the Grant County Region.

To support an exploration of the Virgin of Guadalupe within contemporary visual arts. Guest artist Yolanda Lopez will participate in activities including an exhibition, presentations, workshops, and tours of Virgin of Guadalupe's images in Albuquerque.

To support outreach activities with guest companies the Martha Graham Dance Company and Philadanco. The activites, including lecture-demonstrations, will take place in the rural communities of Cambridge and Alfred that have limited access to dance presentations.

To support the Mountain Culture Festival. Entering its seventh year, the annual summer event promotes regional craft and performing artists and draws an audience of more than 6,000 to the area.

To support the restoration of the Mosaic Bench at Grant's Tomb, first created in 1974. Pedro Silva, the artist who created the bench, will work with community members to repair damaged tile, grout, and mortar.

To support the Summer Arts Jobs Program for Teens. Teens ages 14-17 will be hired to participate in either theatrical performances with a local theater company, or hired to work on a mural with a professional visual artist. Since 1999, the organization has run the successful youth arts employment program.

To support the publication of the Adirondack Arts Directory and Cultural Event Master Calendar. The materials, that will be made available both in print and on the Web, represent over 250 cultural organizations, individual artists, and other entities producing and presenting the art and culture of the Northern Adirondacks.

To support the Community Gospel Concert. Several hundred choristers will be led by composer, pianist Richard Smallwood in celebration of the anniversary of the International Civil Rights Center and Museum.

To support the presentation of German Requiem by Brahms. Related activities include a panel discussion prior to the performance and a master class with guest soloists Erin Kelly and Joshua Copeland.

To support performances by the Paul Taylor 2 Dance Company. Activities will include Q&A sessions with the artists, a children’s performance, and a viewing of the film The Dance Maker.

NORTH DAKOTA

To support a concert performance of Rigoletto by Giuseppe Verdi. The performance will also be presented in a community on the outskirts of Fargo in an effort to introduce new audiences to opera.

To support the presentation of Gus Giordano Jazz Dance Chicago Project. The project will include an evening performance and an afternoon performance targeted to public school audiences.

OREGON
