President Bush to Recognize Denver Man for Dedication to Volunteer Service |
|
President George W. Bush will meet Rick Sullivan when he arrives in Denver,
Colorado, on Tuesday, June 1, 2004. Sullivan, vice president of planning
operations for Regis Jesuit High School in Aurora, Colorado, is an active
volunteer mentor with Boys Hope Girls Hope of Colorado.
The USA Freedom Corps is President Bush’s
initiative to engage all Americans in service to their neighbors and their
nation by volunteering two years or 4,000 hours over the course of their
lifetime. Since January 2002, President Bush has met with hundreds of
individuals around the country, like Sullivan, who are answering the call to
volunteer service.
Sullivan has been a volunteer with Boys Hope Girls Hope of Colorado since its
inception in 1994. He spends about 16 hours each month mentoring residents and
assisting with administrative and maintenance needs at the home. This
multi-denominational residential program helps at-risk students realize their
potential by providing a value-centered home and a quality education through
college. Sullivan has worked with the Boys Hope Girls Hope staff to implement
student admissions and screening procedures, and to improve educational services
for the residents. The students are required to work a summer job to offset
their tuition, and Sullivan serves as supervisor during their employment. He
also plans retreats and special outings to sporting events for the students.
President Bush created the USA Freedom Corps office at the White House to
foster a culture of service, citizenship and responsibility. Through the USA
Freedom Corps, President Bush wants to help every American answer the Call to
Service by strengthening and expanding service opportunities to protect our
homeland, support our communities and extend American compassion around the
world. Interested volunteers can find information on the USA Freedom Corps at
www.usafreedomcorps.gov or by
calling 1-877-USA-CORPS.
