VISTA  members visit and learn at the St.Bernard Project in Louisiana

The VISTA field team visited the St Bernard parish project December 7 though 12. While they were there they learned skills such as dry walling and mold remediation that will be imperative to continuing the flood recovery effort.  Initiated by Congress in 1994, King Day of Service, is a nationwide effort to transform the federal holiday honoring Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. into a day of community service. Community service, grounded in Dr. King’s teachings, will help solve social problems.


 

Dr. King recognized the power of service to strengthen communities while reaching for a common goal.      
        Following the devastating Flood of 2008, community is more important now than ever.  It is through the amazing spirit of the community and the willingness to come together that Cedar Rapids will recover and rebuild.(read more)

The ninth floor of the Hart Building is one of the best kept secrets of Senate office buildings. I had worked in the building for almost a month before I learned that existed in an email asking me speak about my AmeriCorps*VISTA Summer Associate experience for a National Voices of Service reception.
