USA Freedom Corps Launches “A Call to Summer Service” |
|
Today President George W. Bush’s USA Freedom Corps launched an initiative to
encourage Americans to spend a part of their summer in volunteer service.
Through A Call to Summer Service, citizens are reminded that the summer months
are an excellent time to answer the President’s Call to Service, strengthen
their communities, and extend the compassion and greatness of America. Details
can be found at www.usafreedomcorps.gov.
“The summertime offers many opportunities for Americans to step up their
efforts and become more involved with volunteer service,” said Desiree Sayle,
Deputy Assistant to the President and Director, USA Freedom Corps. “During the
summer months school is out, the days are longer, and many Americans take
vacation time from work. Many of us have more time to dedicate to extra
activities, and through A Call to Summer Service, the USA Freedom Corps offers
practical ideas about how volunteer service can be incorporated into our summer
plans.”
A Call to Summer Service:
- Explains important summer needs
that can be met by citizens as they serve
- Offers ideas for young people,
families, seniors, and groups to volunteer during the summer months
- Helps Americans utilize the USA
Freedom Corps Volunteer Network to find volunteer opportunities for the summer
- Provides resources for getting
started with volunteer service this summer
- Encourages volunteers to keep track
of volunteer hours to earn the President’s Volunteer Service Award
In 2002, President George W. Bush issued a Call
to Service for all Americans to volunteer two years or 4,000 hours over the
course of their lifetime in service to others. President Bush created the USA
Freedom Corps office at the White House to foster a culture of service,
citizenship, and responsibility and to help every American answer his Call to
Service. By mentoring a young person, volunteering to protect our homeland, or
extending a hand of compassion to a neighbor in need, everyone can make a
difference.
Those who are interested in volunteer service

Corps at www.usafreedomcorps.gov.
