Great Outdoors Month 2005

In recognition of Great Outdoors Month 2005, President George W. Bush issued a call to Americans to do their part to protect our public lands. Across America, young and old are taking this responsibility seriously and volunteering to help keep our natural areas beautiful for future generations. As Great Outdoors Month kicks off, celebrate our Nation's natural heritage by volunteering in your community to build a cleaner, safer and healthier environment for all Americans.

As part of the President's USA Freedom Corps Call to Service, Take Pride in America is an excellent opportunity for citizens and communities to demonstrate local initiative and environmental stewardship. The program, established by the U.S. Department of the Interior, engages various facets of government and private organizations to offer volunteer opportunities geared toward helping Americans fulfill our responsibility to the environment from their own front porch to our country's 800 million aces of public lands.

  • AMERICORPS ANNOUNCES $14 MILLION IN GRANTS TO SUPPORT 9,500 MEMBERS.  On June 1, 2005, the Corporation for National and Community Service announced nearly $14 million in new grants to 43 organizations across the country. The grants will support a total of 9,552 AmeriCorps members for the 2005-2006 program year. In addition, if all members complete their terms of service, they collectively will be eligible to receive $19.4 million in AmeriCorps Education Awards to pay for college or to pay back student loans....

  • LEARN AND SERVE AMERICA ANNOUNCES GRANTS TO SUPPORT 1.1 MILLION STUDENTS IN SERVICE-LEARNING.  On May 31, 2005, the Corporation for National and Community Service announced more than $43 million in Learn and Serve America grants for the 2005-06 school year. The grants will engage more than 1.1 million students across the nation in service-learning projects that promote community service while enhancing students’ academic and civic skills....

Bush presented the President’s Volunteer Service Award to Dr. John Cotthoff upon arrival in Fort Campbell, Kentucky, on Thursday, June 2, 2005. Cotthoff is a volunteer at the St. Luke Free Clinic in Hopkinsville. To thank them for making a difference in the lives of others, President Bush has met with more than 400 individuals around the country, like Cotthoff, since March 2002....
