Hurricane Response and Recovery:

On September 1st, Hurricane Gustav made landfall in the United States along the Louisiana coast as a Category 2 hurricane.  Today, national service participants and volunteers in the Gulf Coast region and across the country are responding in the aftermath of Hurricane Gustav and preparing for tropical storms Hanna, Ike, and Josephine assembling to the south.  USA Freedom Corps is working closely with our federal partners to respond to the needs of those affected by these storms.

National Service Responds to Hurricane Gustav with Evacuation and Sheltering Support

As tens of thousands of Gulf Coast residents fled Hurricane Gustav’s destructive path last weekend, hundreds of AmeriCorps members and Senior Corps volunteers were on hand to assist in the evacuation and set up and staff emergency shelters.  The primary focus for National Service in the immediate response phase has been assisting evacuation and staffing emergency shelters. More than 45,000 people have evacuated to hundreds of emergency shelters across the Gulf Coast and neighboring states, many supported by AmeriCorps members and RSVP volunteers.

"Answering the Call to Service"

On Monday, September 8, 2008, USA Freedom Corps will release a new report, “Answering the Call to Service,” which details the work of the initiative to help improve communities and change lives over nearly seven years under the President’s leadership.  The report details the response from the millions of individuals who have answered the President’s Call to Service and used their power and energy to affect communities across America.

America Supports You Freedom Walk

America Supports You, Department of Defense’s volunteer support initiative for our troops, will be kicking off the fourth annual America Supports You Freedom Walk from the Pentagon to the National Mall to commemorate the lives lost during the September 11, 2001, attacks.

USA Freedom Corps invites you to join with us and the thousands of others in bolstering support for the Freedom Walk on Sunday, September 7, 2008.  America Supports You encourages you to also create your own local Freedom Walk and to learn more about this important time.

President Bush Recognizes Retired Pastor for Dedication to Volunteer Service

President George W. Bush presented the President’s Volunteer Service Award to Dr. Kent Bull upon arrival in New Orleans, Louisiana, on Wednesday, August 20, 2008. Bull has been a volunteer with Trinity Christian Community and Grove Community Church.
