In his 2002 State of the Union, President Bush called on Americans to help their communities and nation through a commitment to service. From mentoring a young person to building houses for the homeless – those answering the call are eligible for a Presidential medal to recognize their efforts. Make A Difference Day, 2006

Americans across the country will spend October 28th, 2006 making a difference with numerous community projects. Landscaping projects, trail maintenance, and food distribution are among the activities that national service members and volunteers will undertake for national observance of Make A Difference Day.

Six Colleges Receive President's
Honor Roll Award for Service

Six colleges and universities received top recognition for extraordinary community service – three for aiding hurricane victims along the Gulf Coast and three for helping close neighbors – as the first-ever President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll was announced in Chicago on October 17th, 2006.

At School Safety Summit President Bush Emphasizes Importance of Volunteerism and Community Service in Building Strong Communities

President George W. Bush participated in a panel on school safety at the National 4-H Conference Center on October 10th, 2006. "Secondly, it's really important...that people not think government is a loving entity. Government is law and justice. Love comes from the hearts of people that are able to impart love," said President Bush. "One of the things we can do, though, is to call upon people -- we've got the USA Freedom Corps Initiative, for example, that calls on volunteers to take active participation in their communities."

President’s Council Members Recognize Outstanding Volunteer Organizations

Members of the President's Council on Service and Civic Participation recognized three outstanding volunteer efforts in Washington, D.C. on October 11th, 2006.

The President’s Council regularly recognizes programs that perform outstanding volunteer service, and Wednesday’s visits were designed to bring attention to three particularly effective organizations. Council Members visited the Washington City Year program, a Citizens Corps demonstration, and Kid Power-DC. Members spent time learning about the programs, interacted with volunteers, and recognized selected individuals with the President's Volunteer Service Award.
