Overall, 83% of the schools in this project area failed to meet Adequate Yearly Progress. As required by No Child Left Behind (NCLB), the school districts represented by the 4-Corners TAH grant have corrective action plans in place, and this project will support the corrective action plans and initiatives implemented by the districts. Teacher participants will receive intensive, graduate-level training during summer workshops followed by daylong seminars held during the school year. They will learn to work with primary sources and to critically read the secondary literature. They will learn not just about history, but about historiography to better equip themselves to learn beyond the grant. In addition, the project will allow teachers to earn a Master of Arts in history, and all participants will be able to achieve Highly Qualified status under No Child Left Behind. After three years of participation in the 4-Corners TAH project, teachers will have an excellent background, stronger content knowledge, and exposure to a wide variety of American history topics that will translate into improved student learning for consortium districts. Course content will include the following: Pre-Columbian period, settlement of the colonies and the American West through the 21st Century, the American Revolution, the War of 1812, the Mexican War, Spanish-American War, World Wars I and II, and the Vietnam War.
