"Making Master History Teachers" will train elementary, middle, and high school teachers in four clusters to be master teachers and to mentor other teachers in their schools.
A survey of local history teachers revealed that only a small number had majored in history or social studies. Most of these teachers completed only a few American history courses in college. The grants will provide teachers with intensive training in American history subject matter, will increase teacher content knowledge, and will improve instructional practices in U.S. history. Teachers will create lesson plans, document packets, and other classroom materials. Teachers will analyze documents and read history-based books and view historical documentary films that can be used in classrooms. The goals include building a core of master teachers and intensive content seminars to enhance and update the teachers' history skills and knowledge. Among the historical topics to be taught are Colonial America, the Framework for Freedom and Democracy, slavery, the National Period, technological innovation, Reconstruction, the depression, and war. Other sessions will concentrate on analyzing documents and other primary sources and on customizing classroom resources.
