President George W. Bush will meet Karen Kindron when he arrives in Columbus, Ohio, on Saturday, October 2, 2004. Kindronis an active volunteer with Rebuilding Together of Columbus, which provides vital home improvement services for low-income elderly or disabled homeowners.
President Bush hascalled on all Americans to volunteer two years or 4,000 hours over the course of their lifetimes, and hecreated USA Freedom Corpsto help foster a culture of service, citizenship, and responsibility. Since March 2002, President Bush has met with more than 300 individuals around the country, like Kindron, who are answering the call to volunteer service.
For the past eight years, Kindron has been a volunteer with Rebuilding Together, helping eligible homeowners obtain rehabilitation and revitalization services such as home modifications, weatherization, and repair work. Kindron helps with the application screening process and meets with the homeowners before and during the projects. She also procures sponsorships from local organizations and businesses and coordinates volunteers to participate in the building and improvement projects. Since Rebuilding Together was founded in 1988, over two million volunteers have worked to rehabilitate more than 87,000 houses and non-profit facilities nationwide.
Through USA Freedom Corps, President Bush wants to help every American answer the Call to Service by strengthening and expanding service opportunities to protect our homeland, support our communities, and extend American compassion around the world.
