President Bush to Recognize Birmingham Man for Dedication to Volunteer Service |
|
President George W. Bush will meet Jason Nabors upon arrival in Birmingham,
Alabama, on Monday, November 3, 2003. Nabors is an active volunteer with First
Look, a non-profit organization created to increase the number of youth and
young adults involved in community service.
Earlier this year, President Bush celebrated the first anniversary of the USA
Freedom Corps – his initiative to engage all Americans in service to their
neighbors and their nation. President Bush is recognizing individuals around the
country, like Nabors, who are answering the call to volunteer service.
Nabors volunteers with First Look’s “High School Program,” a five-week series
of educational workshops in Birmingham high schools designed to help young
people understand the meaning of community service. As part of the program,
Nabors facilitates discussions with junior and high school students to help them
realize their ability to make a difference, develop a better understanding of
social issues within their community, and learn about the rewards of volunteer
service. This past spring, Nabors also volunteered as part of the First Look
Youth (“FLY”) Council Social Change Retreat, an event involving students from 15
area high schools who engage in a grant review process and award grant money to
community-serving organizations that involve youth in community service
projects. Nabors also serves as a member of First Look’s board of directors.
President Bush created the USA Freedom Corps office at the White House to
foster a culture of service, citizenship and responsibility. Through the USA
Freedom Corps, President Bush wants to help every American answer the call to
volunteer service by strengthening and expanding service opportunities to
protect our homeland, support our communities and extend American compassion
around the world. Interested volunteers can find opportunities in their own
neighborhoods through the USA Freedom Corps web site at
www.usafreedomcorps.gov or by
calling 1-877-USA-CORPS.
