Sponsored by the Points of Light & Hands On Network and supported by USA Freedom Corps, National Volunteer Week is about thanking one of America's most valuable assets – our volunteers – and calling the public's attention to all that they do to improve our communities. The 2008 theme is "Volunteer to Change the World" and runs from April 27th to May 3rd.
National Volunteer Week began in 1974 when President Richard Nixon signed an executive order establishing the week as an annual celebration of volunteering. Since then, every U.S. President has signed a proclamation promoting National Volunteer Week (read President Bush's 2008 proclamation). Additionally, governors, mayors and other elected officials from all over the country make public statements and sign proclamations in support of National Volunteer Week.
In honor of National Volunteer Week, USA Freedom Corps encourages all Americans to participate in a service-related activity.

Organizations - Recognize Your Volunteers!
National Volunteer Week is a perfect time to reflect on the work your organization has done over the past year and to thank all of your hard-working volunteers. In fact, this year the President's Council on Service and Civic Participation is asking you to recognize your volunteers' achievements and efforts by presenting them with a President's Volunteer Service Award.
 Global Youth Service Day
April also marks Global Youth Service Day (GYSD). From April 25 through April 27, GYSD mobilizes youth to identify and address the needs of their communities through service and learning, supports youth on a lifelong path of service and civic engagement, and educates the public, the media, and policymakers about the year-round contributions of young people as community leaders.
