President Bush to Recognize Omaha Woman for Dedication to Volunteer Service

President George W. Bush will meet Anne Carroll when he arrives in Omaha, Nebraska on Monday, May 12, 2003. Carroll is an active volunteer with several local organizations who works closely with Habitat for Humanity on local and international projects to eliminate substandard housing.

Earlier this year, President Bush celebrated the first anniversary of the USA Freedom Corps – his initiative to engage all Americans in service to their neighbors and their nation. President Bush is recognizing individuals around the country like Carroll who are answering the call to volunteer service.

A longtime volunteer with her children’s schools, for the past twelve years Carroll has dedicated approximately 30 hours each week to a variety of volunteer projects. Carroll works on building projects and coordinates an annual fundraiser for Habitat for Humanity in Omaha. She also coordinates trips for Habitat’s Global Village program, which takes American volunteers to foreign countries to live and work with their host communities to combat substandard housing. Carroll has coordinated trips to Trinidad, Romania, Portugal, Ireland, and Poland, and is presently coordinating a trip to Hungary. In addition to her work with Habitat, she delivers Meals on Wheels weekly, works in the library of her daughter’s school, serves on the World Outreach Committee at her church and is active in the University of Nebraska Omaha Faculty Women’s Group.

President Bush created the USA Freedom Corps office at the White House to foster an American culture of service, citizenship and responsibility. Through the USA Freedom Corps, President Bush wants to help every American answer the call to service by strengthening and expanding service opportunities to protect our homeland, support our communities and extend American compassion around the world. Interested volunteers can find information on the USA Freedom Corps at www.usafreedomcorps.gov or by calling 1-877-USA-Corps.
