President Bush to Recognize Pittsburgh Man for Dedication to Volunteer Service

President George W. Bush will meet Xavier D. Williams upon arrival in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, on Monday, July 28, 2003. For the past 10 years, Williams has worked with minority youth to help them develop professional skills to succeed in the workplace.

Earlier this year, President Bush celebrated the first anniversary of the USA Freedom Corps – his initiative to engage all Americans in service to their neighbors and their nation. President Bush is recognizing individuals around the country, like Williams, who are answering the call to volunteer service.

From 1993 to 2000, Williams volunteered as an instructor with the Program for Accelerated Careers in Computer Science, which teaches basic computer skills to inner-city and disadvantaged children. Since 1998, Williams has worked with minority youth through Inroads, a nonprofit organization that matches young minority adults with successful businesses and corporations to help them prepare for corporate and community leadership. Williams is also a board member of the Urban League of Pittsburgh, the MIT Enterprise Forum and a trustee of Holy Family Institute Social Services.

President Bush created the USA Freedom Corps office at the White House to foster a culture of service, citizenship and responsibility. Through the USA Freedom Corps, President Bush wants to help every American answer the call to volunteer service by strengthening and expanding service opportunities to protect our homeland, support our communities and extend American compassion around the world. This summer, the USA Freedom Corps is helping individuals, families, and groups find opportunities to volunteer in their own neighborhoods or on vacations away from home through the new “How I Spent My Summer” initiative. More information on these opportunities is available at www.usafreedomcorps.gov or by calling
