In September 2008, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services partnered with USA Freedom Corps to hold an award ceremony honoring volunteersof Pregnancy Resource Centers (PRC). PRCs have long been a priority of Admiral Joxel Garcia, Assistant Secretary for health and the head of the U.S. Public Health Service. Volunteers are essential to theoperations of the centers.Their services, which are provided almost entirely by unpaid volunteers, empower women to be able to give birth to healthy babies.

PRCs act as silent partners, supporting the heart of the mission of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services: “to protect the health of all Americans and provide essential human services, especially for those who are least able to help themselves.”

Volunteers from around the country were honored for their time spent in service to pregnant women aided by PRCs. Approximately 3,000 PRCs nationwide deliver essential services to pregnant women in need, free of charge. PRCs provide ultrasound imaging, pregnancy tests, counseling, STD testing, childbirth instructions, parenting classes, maternity homes, and baby supplies to women in underserved communities who otherwise would not have access to them.
